My most recent trip to Bohol included a stop at the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella, Bohol. And I’m grateful. Now, I’ve seen these tiny, wide-eyed wonders before, but this was a whole different ballgame. This was my first time experiencing the sanctuary, and let me tell you, it was way more than just a quick peek at some cute critters.
The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary
You see, my very first tarsier encounter was well, let’s just say a bit more “impromptu.” It was one of those quick stops we did just because we were already in the area. Don’t get me wrong, I was thrilled to see them then, but it felt a bit rushed. This time, I wanted to appreciate these unique creatures in a setting that prioritized their well-being. And the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary delivered. Big time.

Driving up to the sanctuary, you already get a sense of peace. The lush greenery, the quiet atmosphere โ it’s a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As you walk towards the visitor’s center, you’re greeted by friendly guides who are clearly passionate about the tarsiers. They also showed us a video presentation about the importance of respecting the animals and their habitat. It was refreshing to see such a strong emphasis on conservation.

One of the biggest differences from my previous experience was the atmosphere. The sanctuary is designed to be as quiet as possible. No loud noises, no flash photography, and definitely no touching. These little guys are incredibly sensitive, and stress can be detrimental to their health. It’s a testament to the sanctuary’s dedication to their well-being.

Walking along the designated trails, you have to keep your eyes peeled. Tarsiers are masters of camouflage! But with the guides pointing them out, we were able to spot several of them clinging to tree trunks, their big, expressive eyes staring back at us. It was truly mesmerizing.

A Deeper Appreciation
What struck me most about the sanctuary was the sense of respect. It wasn’t just about showing off the tarsiers; it was about educating visitors about their fragile ecosystem and the importance of conservation. The guides shared fascinating facts about their habits, their diet, and the challenges they face. I learned so much more than I expected!

It’s one thing to see a picture of a tarsier, or even to see one in a less-than-ideal setting. It’s another thing entirely to experience them in their natural habitat, in a place that prioritizes their welfare. The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella gave me a whole new level of appreciation for these incredible animals. Thank you, Corella!

Things to Keep in Mind
- Go early: The sanctuary is less crowded in the morning, which means a quieter and more enjoyable experience.
- Be respectful: Remember to keep your voice down, avoid using flash photography, and don’t touch the tarsiers.
- Listen to the guides: They’re a wealth of information and can help you spot the tarsiers.
- Wear comfortable shoes: You’ll be doing a bit of walking on the trails, which can be slippery.
- Bring your camera (no flash!): You’ll want to capture the memories (but be mindful of the rules).
If you’re planning a trip to Bohol, the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary is a must-see. It’s a chance to connect with nature, learn about these fascinating creatures, and support a vital conservation effort. Trust me, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget!
