Leylander in Ilocos: Inside the Malacañang of the North

My great Ilocos Region adventure was a wonderful mix of stunning landscapes, rich culture, and fascinating history. One of the highlights was definitely my quick visit to the Malacañang of the North in Ilocos Norte, also known as Malacañang ti Amianan by the locals.

This grand mansion, perched on the shores of the scenic Paoay Lake, served as the former residence of the Marcos family during their time in power. Stepping into the Malacañang of the North felt like stepping back in time. The architecture is a fascinating blend of Spanish, Filipino, and Ilocano influences, creating a truly unique ambiance. If you’re a fan of both architecture and history, then you’ll surely love this spot.

The tour of the mansion was an eye-opening experience. The rooms, each with a theme related to the Marcos era, offered a glimpse into their lives and interests. It was refreshing to see how history was portrayed from their perspective.

One of the things that struck me most was how massive and grand the place was. From the furniture to the gardens, it was evident that this home was one of the most important addresses during its time.

While the Malacañang of the North presents a specific viewpoint of history, it obviously also serves as a valuable reminder of a significant period in the Philippines. And for that, I am grateful that this remains open to the public to this day.

Overall, visiting the Malacañang of the North was a truly enriching experience. It provided a unique perspective on an important section of our history and culture that I didn’t get to experience first-hand.

If you’re planning a trip to Ilocos Norte, I highly recommend adding this fascinating place to your itinerary.
