In Photos: The Beautiful Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in Ilocos

As part of my Great Ilocos Adventure with fellow Cebu bloggers, one of the places that I got to visit was the Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in Burgos, Ilocos Norte. I must tell you, I’ve seen countless photos of this historic spot online. And to finally be there for the first time to see it in person was a surreal experience. Truly, I am so thankful for such an opportunity.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse, also known as Burgos Lighthouse, was first lit in 1892 during the Spanish colonial period. Located on top of Vigia de Nagpartian Hill, the lighthouse is considered an icon. It has long served as a beacon for ships navigating the rocky waters of the West Philippine Sea. At more than a century old, it remains one of the most well-preserved and well-loved Spanish-era lighthouses in the country. In fact, it is even recognized as a National Historical Landmark and a National Cultural Treasure.

Walking around its grounds, I couldn’t help but admire its rustic beauty. The brick walls and the spiral iron staircase that lead to the top are just amazing. There’s also a small museum within the premises. There, visitors can learn more about the lighthouse’s history and its important role in Philippine maritime heritage.

How to Get to Cape Bojeador

Cape Bojeador is located in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, about 40–45 minutes north of Laoag City. From Laoag, you can take a bus or van heading toward Pagudpud. You can then ask the driver to drop you off near the lighthouse entrance in Burgos. From the highway, a short tricycle ride or a steep uphill walk will take you directly to the site.

For those coming as part of a tour, Cape Bojeador is often included in the northern Ilocos itinerary. Other stops usually include the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation and Bangui Windmills. Thus, it’s quite easy to visit several attractions in one go.

Tips for Visitors of Cape Bojeador

  • Best Time to Visit: Go in the morning or late afternoon when the sun isn’t too harsh. The light also makes for better photos.
  • Bring Water: The walk up can be a bit steep, so it’s good to stay hydrated.
  • Take Your Time: Don’t just rush to the lighthouse. Spend a moment enjoying the view from the deck—it’s one of the best in Ilocos.
  • Photography: The lighthouse itself, the surrounding brick structures, and the sweeping seascape all make for Instagram-worthy shots.

A Favorite Stop in Ilocos

This visit was truly one of my favorites from the trip. Cape Bojeador is more than just a tourist attraction—it’s a cultural treasure, a photographer’s dream, and a place where history meets breathtaking scenery. Seeing it in photos before was one thing, but standing there with the sea breeze on my face and the lighthouse towering above me was something I’ll never forget.
