Paoay Church: A Dream Finally Fulfilled

For the longest time, I had only seen Paoay Church on postcards, travel blogs, and social media. Its massive facade, intricate buttresses, and historical significance made it one of the places I longed to visit. Finally, thanks to the Department of Tourism Region 1, that dream became a reality.

Paoay Church, also known as the San Agustin Church of Paoay, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is considered one of the most iconic churches in the Philippines. Built in 1710 by Augustinian friars in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, the church is a testament to the enduring faith and architectural brilliance of Filipinos.

The church’s Baroque architecture is unique in a lot of ways. Its enormous buttresses give it a grand yet resilient appearance. It is because of this unique earthquake-resistant design that the church has withstood the test of time and nature.

Walking towards the church, I felt a mix of excitement and reverence. Don’t get me wrong. The church looks amazing in photos. Up close, the details were even more impressive—the texture of the centuries-old bricks, the intricately carved facade, and the massive buttresses that support the structure. I tell you, I was in awe!

Inside the Paoay Church

Inside, the atmosphere was lovely. The high ceilings and rustic interiors exuded an old-world charm. As I sat on one of the wooden pews, I couldn’t help but think about the generations of people who had come here to pray, celebrate, and seek solace. It was a beautiful experience, one that made me appreciate our rich heritage even more even as a Cebuano who lived miles away.

Exploring the Surroundings

Outside the church itself, the surrounding area was just as lovely. The open grounds and the soft breeze made it the perfect place to sit, reflect, and take in the beauty of the moment. I took my time walking around and taking dozens of photos. Of course, I also did the obligatory selfies and a few snaps with my tour mates.

Visiting Paoay Church was more than just ticking off a bucket list destination—it was a realization of a long-held dream and a deeper appreciation of history and culture.

So, if you ever find yourself in Ilocos Norte, this is one place you should never miss. Seeing it in photos is one thing, but witnessing its grandeur in person is an entirely different experience—one that I will forever treasure
