Whenever someone says “Chocolate Hills”, I always think about rolling, chocolate-colored mounds stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s a sight that’s both surreal and breathtaking, a true testament to how amazing nature can be. And recently, I had the distinct pleasure of experiencing this magical landscape for a second time.
My first visit to the Chocolate Hills was years ago. It was a quick tour with my family that left me in awe but wanting more. This time around, thanks to the Department of Tourism (DOT) Bohol office, I got to experience the place on a deeper level. I was fortunate to be part of a group of Cebuano media and content creators invited to cover the vibrant Ubi Festival, a celebration of Bohol’s well-loved purple yam. And what better way to complement the sweet flavors of ubi than with the amazing beauty of the Chocolate Hills?

Returning to Carmen, Bohol, felt like coming home. The familiar hills, now still bright green, were as mesmerizing as I remembered. The scale of the landscape is hard to capture in photos. You really have to stand there, taking in the panoramic view, to fully appreciate its beauty.

This second visit offered a different perspective. While the first time was about the “wow” factor, this time I had more time to focus on the details. This time, I noticed the subtle difference in the shapes and sizes of the hills. I also noticed the way the light played on their slopes. Most of all, I noticed the quiet beauty of the surrounding communities. I also learned more about the geological formations of the hills and the various theories surrounding their origin. (You need to check out the National Museum of the Philippines Bohol to learn more!)

The DOT Bohol’s initiative to include us in the Ubi Festival coverage was a brilliant move. It showcased not only the delicious ubi and its versatility but also the other attractions that make Bohol a must-visit destination.

Beyond the stunning views, this trip was also about connecting with fellow content creators and sharing our experiences. We swapped stories, captured countless photos and videos, and bonded over our shared appreciation for Bohol’s beauty. It was an awesome experience!

My second encounter with the Chocolate Hills was a sweet reminder of why I fell in love with Bohol in the first place. It’s a place where nature’s beauty takes center stage, where the simple act of gazing at the horizon can fill you with a sense of wonder. And I have a feeling it won’t be my last visit. There’s always something new to discover, a different perspective to explore, and a deeper appreciation to gain with every return.
So, if you’re planning a trip to Bohol, make sure the Chocolate Hills are on your itinerary. You won’t be disappointed.
