In Photos: The Mesmerizing Pitogo Cliff of Siquijor

The last stop of our Siquijor adventure was Pitogo Cliff, a scenic and very well-loved spot in San Juan. This tour, sponsored by Sunlight Air, was a series of stops that took a group of Cebu-based media people and content creators across the beautiful island.

The group arrived at Pitogo Cliff quite late in the afternoon. We really didn’t expect much. Personally, I thought that we would just see a natural formation from a distance, and that would be it. But I was wrong.

Pitogo Cliff

Pitogo Cliff is a natural rock formation along the coastline of Siquijor, rising above a stretch of clear, deep water. It is the kind of place that looks like it was designed specifically for the brave (or the crazy), as it has a natural ‘launching pad’ for anyone willing (and able) to leap.

The launching pad itself is not impossibly high, but the whole cliff is. How high, you ask? Well, it’s high enough that standing at the edge and looking down at the water below requires a certain kind of commitment, and maybe a little introspection. Hehe.

The water below is very clear. But from where I stood, I could not see the bottom, which makes the jump look both inviting and intimidating at the same time. And, of course, it’s naturally a NO for me.

A Gorgeous Final Stop

The group arrived at Pitogo Cliff at the perfect time because the light was warm and the water was calm. Honestly, the conditions could not have been better.

Nobody in our group jumped. Not because they were scared, of course. It was simply the last stop of the tour, and the thought of changing into swimwear for a few minutes in the water was enough to keep everyone on dry land.

But to be honest, standing at the edge of Pitogo Cliff and looking down at the water below, I made a personal and fully rational decision that my afternoon would be better spent on solid ground with a camera. And I’m glad that I stood by that decision. Haha. Watching other visitors jump is its own kind of experience, especially when you have a good view and no obligation to do it as well.

If you are visiting Pitogo Cliff and you are physically able, and the conditions are safe, and you have even the smallest part of you that wants to do it, jump. If, like me, you would rather keep your feet on the rock and your camera pointed at everyone else, that is a perfectly valid choice, too. The view from the top is worth the visit on its own, anyway.

The ‘Forest’ at Pitogo Cliff

Beyond the jumping, Pitogo Cliff is quite an intriguing spot. If you look up Pitogo Cliff online, you will probably see the same things everyone talks about. But what I wasn’t really expecting was the beautiful, almost scary ‘forest’ you’d have to pass through to get to the cliff. To be perfectly clear, it was no forest because the property is quite small, but the lush ‘greens’ give the place a more exciting and mysterious vibe.

Pitogo Cliff was one of those stops on the Siquijor tour that I did not know I needed until I was standing there watching everyone else leap into the water below. It is not the kind of place that requires much explanation or build-up. You arrive, you see the cliff, you see the water, and you immediately understand why people come here.

I didn’t do the jump, but that’s just another reason to come back. Maybe next time, I’ll be brave enough to take the leap.

But, we will see. 🙂
