A Quiet Moment in Nagbacalan: A Beautiful Treasure in Ilocos

During my Great Ilocos Adventure, I had the chance to visit a lot of beautiful and historic places. But one of the many stops that truly stood out was my visit to Nagbacalan, a quiet barangay in the municipality of Paoay, Ilocos Norte. This was my very first time in Nagbacalan, and I must say it was a visit I won’t soon forget.

Nagbacalan

Located not far from the more popular Paoay Church, Nagbacalan may not be as famous, but it holds a charm that’s both quiet and captivating. Known for its rich tradition of handwoven inabel textiles, this community offers a glimpse into the heart and soul of Ilocano culture.

When I arrived, the first thing I noticed was how peaceful everything felt. The roads were quiet, lined with simple homes and small workshops. I was welcomed by friendly smiles and warm greetings. To me, this was proof of the genuine hospitality Ilocanos are known for.

Inabel Weaving

One of the highlights of my visit was stepping into one of the traditional weaving centers. There, I met local weavers, mostly elderly women, who have been keeping the age-old craft of inabel weaving alive.

Watching them work was both amazing and humbling. Their hands moved with so much ease, and they create intricate patterns using age-old wooden looms as if slicing a cake. It was clear that this wasn’t just a livelihood. It was clear that it was a labor of love.

Aside from the weaving, Nagbacalan also gave me a deeper appreciation for sustainable living. The community is slowly embracing eco-friendly practices, reusing materials, and promoting traditional methods that are both practical and environment-conscious.

Though my visit was brief, it left a lasting impression. There’s a quiet pride in Nagbacalan. Indeed, it is a community rooted in tradition yet moving thoughtfully into the future.

If you ever find yourself in Ilocos, I highly recommend dropping by. Spend time with the craftswomen, learn about their work, and take home a piece of their story through a handwoven inabel cloth.

And as they always say, sometimes, it’s the quiet corners like Nagbacalan that tell the most beautiful stories.

Thanks for sticking around and see you on my next adventures!
